I Care San Antonio’s largest program is operating the I Care Vision Center at Haven for Hope, a 22-acre campus providing multiple services to the homeless. I Care San Antonio’s largest program is operating the I Care Vision Center at Haven for Hope, a 22-acre campus providing multiple services to the homeless. Over 35 volunteer optometrists and ophthalmologists donate a half day each month to provide vision care to low income and homeless individuals in San Antonio and the surrounding counties. Under the overall I Care San Antonio Vision Center program are three specialty programs:
1. Eye on Diabetes: 40% of people living with diabetes will have some type of diabetic retinopathy. The Eye on Diabetes program provides complete vision care, including retina treatments to low income and homeless individuals living with diabetes.
2. Eye on Seniors: Loss of vision is one of the most feared complication of again. Approximately one in 28 U.S. adults older than 40 years is visually impaired. With a rapidly aging population, the number of persons with visual impairment in the United States and worldwide is expected to increase significantly in the next decade. Seniors with low vision are at high risk of depression, medication errors, injury, and isolation. It is important for seniors to maintain their vision care however, one in four Central Texas older adults have income at or below 200% of the poverty threshold and are likely to experience some type of economic hardship, thus making it difficult to afford health care. The Eye on Seniors program provides complete eye care, including cataract surgeries to our most vulnerable seniors and aging veterans.
3. iCare4kids: Nearly 25% (1 in 4) of school-age children, who have vision problems that are not detected or treated, can find school to be challenging and difficult. If kids can’t see the books, how are they going to learn to read? iCare4kids provides early detection and treatment of eye and vision problems for children by receiving a free comprehensive eye exam, free glasses and free follow-up care as needed. The earlier a vision problem is diagnosed and treated, the less the potential negative impact it may have on the child’s development.
