The Associaiton of Amputee Surfers (DBA AMpSurf and the Para Surf League) is a highly respected service provider and the “go-to” resource for adaptive surfing. Since 2003 our AmpSurf’s mission has been to “Promote, Inspire, Educate and Rehabilitate” people living with disabilities through adaptive surfing.
Our instructors are trained using our Adaptive Surf Instructor Certification Program which is considered the gold standard of the adaptive surfing community and has been adopted by the ISA for training Adaptive Surf instructors around the world. Instructors are taught to work with a wide range of conditions including but not limited to Amputations, PTSD, Spinal Cord Injury and TBI. Volunteers represent a variety of professions including physical, occupational, and mental health therapies, prosthetics, education, military, and the arts.
We hold events in California, Massachusetts, Maine, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Oregon, New Hampshire and Puerto Rico. We also hold events in England, Wales, France, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. Events include Learn to Surf Clinics, Instructor Training, and Adaptive Para Surfing Contests.
We have collaborative relationships with organizations including VA Adaptive Sports, RI Serves, Military One Source, Veterans’ Outreach, Legends of Valor, Wounded Warrior Project, Hope for the Warriors, Marin Co. Veterans Services, U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs, the American Legion, Rotary Club, and the VFW.
In 2018, AmpSurf was invited to be a charter member of the International Surf Therapy Organization (ISTO), whose mission is to promote understanding, share best practices and advocate excellence in surf therapy. It has been established that adaptive sports have significant benefits for participants. Surfing is one of the best activities for meeting Veterans’ needs. The buoyancy, ease of mobility and a sense of oneness with the ocean is therapeutic, giving the participant a sense of freedom and speed not easily attained elsewhere. The biggest benefit occurs when a veteran realizes to focus on their abilities, not their disabilities.
Since 2003 AmpSurf has been serving Veterans and the disabled community. Below is a list of some of the things we have accomplished over the years:
