The Doorways provides lodging for patients and their loved ones who must travel to Richmond, VA for routine, specialized and critical medical care because the treatment they need is not available where they live. The Doorways removes the financial and logistical barriers faced by those who must travel for medical care, and allows families to stay focused on their health and healing when it matters most: during their medical crisis. Guests are asked to make a $15 per person per night donation toward their stay; however, no guest is turned away due to his/her financial situation.
Each year we provide 50,000 nights of lodging and support to nearly 10,000 people and average approximately 150 guests each night. Our average length of stay is 6 nights; however, many of our transplant patients stay for months at a time while they await their transplant and receive follow up medical care.
Guests are referred to The Doorways by physicians, staff and/or social workers from our partner hospitals: VCU Health/MCV Hospitals, McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of RIchmond at VCUH, World Pediatric Project, Sheltering Arms Hospital, HealthSouth Medical Center, Virginia Treatment Center for Children, Retreat Hospital, and Vibra Hospital.
Since 1985 we have served 160,000 patients and their family members. 75% of our guests come from all over Virginia. The remaining guests come from all fifty states and thirty one other countries.
