Moravian Open Door (MOD) is a not-for-profit (501c-3) organization committed to providing transitional housing and supportive services to the homeless, distressed and underserved population of New York City. Our ministry serves those individuals who are fifty and older with the goal of helping them regain their independence and security, and assisting them in moving to appropriate, permanent facilities.

Established in 1987 by the Eastern District of the Moravian Church in North America, MOD is funded solely by church and private donations and a nominal monthly program fee. MOD does not receive any city, state, or federal funding.

MOD is not a drop-in shelter or a nursing facility, but is a safe, clean, drug and alcohol-free transitional home (called Moravian House) that provides private and semi-private rooms for up to 41 homeless adults who are just “one step away” from independence. Individuals come to MOD recommended by a shelter or agency in New York. Upon admission, each new resident receives a personal service plan to address the causes of homelessness and to build greater self-reliance.

A safe, clean, drug and alcohol-free living environment provides residents with private and semi-private rooms as well as a daily nourishing breakfast (except Sunday). Other facilities include a communal kitchen where residents can prepare meals, on-site laundry facilities, a Common Room as well as a courtyard where residents can socialize. Residents have their own mailboxes; they also have the use of the kitchen and the Common Room.

An on-site Life Skills Center with four computers provides training in computer skills, preparing resumes, preparing for and keeping a job, education in financial literacy, healthy living, and other life skills. Residents have their own email accounts and access to the Internet.

The MOD staff consists of an Executive Director, a Social Worker, and a Facility Manager, with a part-time breakfast cook and part-time night clerk.

The staff helps residents through every aspect of the job search. This includes scanning job listings, resume and cover letter development, mock job interviews and collecting letters of reference. Eligible residents are assisted with obtaining Social Security Income, Social Security Disability, Public Assistance and Veteran benefits. Referrals are made for affordable apartments, and where appropriate, for assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Assistance is also given with various applications for housing programs.

Special dinners and cookouts celebrate holidays. These and other activities are hosted by MOD staff, visiting youth groups, and church groups. Movies, bingo, games, and community events are available for residents.

Volunteer Nursing groups organize health fairs for residents. Referrals are also made to local health providers.
