Stone Soup Corvallis Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer program that provides a free nutrient-rich delicious meals to hungry residents of Corvallis. It serves meals seven days a week, 365 days a year. Because Stone Soup wants to be as welcoming as possible, we collect no demographic data on those who come for our meals. The target populations include the homeless, semi-homeless, veterans, seniors and families in need. All are welcome, no quesstions asked.
Most of the work including planning the menus, preparing, cooking, serving and cleaning up is accomplished by volunteers. Overall, more than 500 volunteers work on the meals throughout the year.
Our volunteers prepare and serve a daily meal at one of two locations: Sunday Dinner at 5:30-6:30 pm at First Christian Church (FCC) on Madison Avenue, Monday Dinner at 5:30-6:30 pm at First Congregational United Church of Christ (FCUCC) on West Hills Road, Tuesday Dinner at 5:30-6:30 pm at FCC, Wednesday Lunch at 11:30 am -12:30 pm at FCUCC, Thursday Dinner at 5:30-6:30 pm at FCUCC, Friday Lunch at 11:30 am -12:30 pm at FCUCC, and Saturday Brunch at 10-11 am at FCC. In addition, on four days each week, our FCUCC volunteers prepare hot and cold food (enough to serve 40 meals) that we send to the Hygiene Center in South Corvallis for Unity Shelter staff to serve take-away meals there.
In recent years Stone Soup Corvallis Inc. has been serving over 40,000 meals - over 110 per day. Our mode of operation and costs both had to change significantly as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are proud of the organization's ability to continue serving a daily meal through this period. Cost of food increased greatly during this period, but it is still only about $3 per meal.
