Deadly FSU shooting: Two people, who were not students, were killed and five others wounded in a shooting today at Florida State University in Tallahassee, according to local police. Officers shot the suspected gunman, who is now hospitalized. The suspect: Authorities identified the suspect as a 20-year-old FSU student and the son of a local sheriff’s deputy, and said they found a handgun that used to be his mother’s service weapon as they took him into custody. A shotgun was found in the school’s student union and another gun in the suspect’s car, according to a law enforcement official.
The deputy has been with the sheriff’s office for over 18 years and has done “a tremendous job,” McNeil said. “Her service to this community has been exceptional,” McNeil said. “Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons, and that was one of the weapons that was found at the scene, and we are continuing that investigation into how that weapon was used and what other weapons perhaps he may have had access to.” The alleged shooter was also a longtime member of the youth advisory council at the sheriff’s office, Mcneil said. Two people were killed and five others shot at Florida State University today, Tallahassee Police Department clarified after an afternoon news conference. Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell had said during the news conference that two people died, six people were injured and the suspect was sent to the hospital, saying it was a total of nine people. After the live news conference, police said five people were shot, but a total of six people were sent to the hospital. It is not immediately clear if the sixth person is the suspect. This is in addition to the two people who died.
Today is a “tragic day” for the Florida State University community, President Richard McCullough said. “We’re absolutely heartbroken by the violence that occurred on our campus earlier today,” he said at a news conference. McCullough said the university is working to support the victims, their families and everyone impacted by the shooting. He has visited the hospital and met with student victims, he added. “Our hearts go out to our students and the victims of this of this terrible tragedy,” he said. “I have to say that our law enforcement, our FSU police officers — absolute heroes in this regard. "Officers’ immediate response “prevented this from being a bigger tragedy,” he added.
