Musical Instruction
The SPCM offers comprehensive music instruction in music theory, piano, guitar, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and voice in private and group lessons, camps and workshops to people of all ages. We teach the fundamentals of instruments and voice, as well as music theory, history, and performance. SPCM offers financial aid for high need, high potential students. Our 50 faculty members are world-class musicians and teachers, with 80% holding a masters or doctorate degree. SPCM’s current student body consists of over 300 students of all ages and levels, from infants to adults, and from beginners to music majors. SPCM abides by the National MENC and State of Minnesota standards in music education and classroom curriculum initiatives.
Public Performances
The SPCM presents seven free lunchtime “Coffee Concert” performances each year, making exceptional performances accessible to audiences of all ages and abilities. During the COVID-19 pause in live programming, we recorded our Coffee Concerts and featured them on our website, garnering many more views than we anticipated. In a typical year these monthly concerts attract an average of 120 audience members, but our virtual programming is averaging 750+. As a result, we will continue to record and offer access to audiences both online and in person, beginning in fall 2021.
Throughout the year, SPCM hosts opportunities for our students and faculty to perform, including our annual Halloween and Holiday Concerts, Spring Rhapsody, and fall and spring Student Recitals. Audiences average 150+ at each concert. We also host recitals for our Suzuki and Chamber Music Academy throughout the year. In 2022, concerts will be held in-person but also recorded for distribution on our website and social media platforms.
Community Outreach Programs
SPCM is committed to leveling the musical playing field for people who would otherwise not have access to music lessons and performing opportunities. We partner with Saint Paul Public Schools to offer instruction for 250 children in six low-income schools. We also program free faculty concerts throughout the year at area libraries, community centers and senior housing facilities. Current annual partnering communities include Cerenity Senior Care, Central Towers, Minnesota Veterans Home, Regions Hospital, Bethesda Hospital, and life enrichment programs at Edina Care.
