Motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, Cassidy's goal was to get people talking about the disorder in an effort to dispel myths and inform those with seizures that they were not alone. Motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, Cassidy's goal was to get people talking about the disorder in an effort to dispel myths and inform those with seizures that they were not alone. She named the day Purple Day® after the internationally recognized color for epilepsy, lavender.
Today, Purple Day® has become the largest grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. Each year on March 26, people from around the globe are asked to wear purple and spread the word about epilepsy. The Anita Kaufmann Foundation has teamed up with epilepsy organizations from around the world to help make Purple Day® one of the largest global epilepsy awareness initiatives ever, now celebrated in over 80 countries and in every state in the US. And, answering the requests of persons with epilepsy to ensure epilepsy awareness each and every day, AKF has launched the “Purple Day® Every Day” Initiative.
Our groundbreaking Fifth Grade Education Program is offered free of charge throughout the United States and has provided more than 500,000 students with an understanding of epilepsy and seizure first aid while promoting acceptance. Free epilepsy education programs are provided upon request, with attendees gaining a wealth of information and specially designed educational materials to share in their communities. AKF has also collaborated with the VA’s Epilepsy Centers of Excellence and created their signature Heads Up For Vets Program which supports our US Veterans who are returning home from foreign wars with Traumatic Brain Injury and a heightened risk for post-TBI epilepsy. And, as the global sponsor for Purple Day® - World Epilepsy Day™, AKF and their Advocates help to organize events throughout the US and around the globe and produce free awareness materials for public use. In conjunction with epilepsy organization worldwide, their goal is to make Purple Day® the largest grassroots epilepsy awareness initiative in the world.
