5Cities Homeless Coalition is dedicated to changing lives in southern San Luis Obispo County, California – from Avila Beach to Nipomo. The Coalition strengthens the community by mobilizing resources, fostering hope, and advocating for the homeless and those facing homelessness.
Through collaboration and leadership, the Coalition is building an engaged community that fully understands the complexities of homelessness and actively shares the responsibility of creating and implementing solutions to reduce it.
Founded in 2009, 5Cities Homeless Coalition has developed strength as a community leader by working closely with other community agencies and organizations to assess services and opportunities for collaboration. Coalition staff members regularly visit hospitals, food pantries and encampments, conducting outreach to homeless residents. Through outreach, information and referral, service coordination, housing assistance, and support with immediate needs, hundreds of the area’s most vulnerable individuals and families receive coordinated and expanded services to help them achieve self-sufficiency.
5Cities Homeless Coalition helps families stay together, homeless children in local school districts stay in school, and those who have nowhere else to go move from the streets into homes that are warm and safe. The Coalition is often a last resort for many families, providing deposits for housing, move-in costs, and immediate needs such as bus passes, textbooks, childcare, transportation expenses, utility assistance, auto repair, groceries, hygiene items and clothing.
Coalition services include eviction prevention, rapid re-housing, financial education, information and referral, emergency assistance, benefits advocacy, medical respite/detox and programs specifically designed for veterans and homeless youth. With no permanent overnight shelter in the South County, the Coalition also operates a Warming Center at a local church on winter nights when rain or cold make sleeping outdoors a health and safety risk.
