Women veterans are the fastest growing segment of veterans, and unfortunately, also the fastest growing segment of homeless veterans. While male veteran homelessness rates have decreased in recent years, women veteran rates have increased. Women veterans are more than twice as likely to become homeless than nonveteran women, and more likely to die by suicide than nonveteran women. When compared to their male counterparts, women veterans are more likely to be single parents, live below the poverty threshold, experience higher unemployment rates and receive lower median income. We are the community and safety net for our women veterans. Our programs provide stable foundations that prevent homelessness and enhance the economic and personal wellbeing of women veterans and their children.
Our Transition and Emergency Services provide women veterans with financial literacy education alongside short-term, high-impact financial assistance and connections to necessary community services/resources. Our holistic approach gives women veterans the urgent and critical relief they need to navigate life’s obstacles, make successful life transitions, prevent homelessness, and serve as a safety net when unforeseen necessary expenses or events place women veterans and their children at risk for falling into (or back into) homelessness.
Our childcare assistance addresses one of the most challenging issues in transition and is the only program of its kind in the country. It offers to offset childcare costs for working and student veteran mothers so they may have the financial security to attain their career and educational goals.
We also provide referrals to various community services and resources that are geographically desirable and address a variety of needs for our women veterans. By leveraging our deep connections with hundreds of partners in Southern California, we provide a real-time triage of the many issues that face our women veterans.
Alongside our Transition and Emergency Services, we provide essential goods and deliver financial education and professional development workshops for our women veteran community. Through our two warehouse locations in Vista and North Hollywood, California, we distribute necessities such as new and unused baby supplies (diapers, formula, car seats, cribs, etc.), clothing and other critical household items to reduce costs and ensure our women veterans and their children have their most basic of needs met.
Our professional development and financial workshops provide a space where our veterans can learn vital skills for transitioning into the civilian workforce and begin to expand their professional networks. We leverage our partnerships with Prudential and other experts to lead interactive sessions on topics such as budgeting, networking, interviewing, navigating career change, employment opportunities, leadership, negotiating salary, and more. Veterans are also given opportunities for continued mentoring through our partner, Veterati.
