SSCAC has over 200 employees and is led by CEO, Lisa Spencer. Our Board of Directors includes 18 individuals – 1/3rd town select board members or their designees, 1/3rd low-income representatives, and 1/3rd community stakeholders – all of whom are volunteers and south shore residents. Our main office is located in Plymouth. We also have 6 Early Education centers (Plymouth, Marshfield, Wareham, Hyannis, and West Yarmouth), 2 Fuel Assistance intake offices (Plymouth, Mashpee), and our Food Distribution Center (Plymouth). Programs include:
• Food Resources: fights hunger and promotes nutrition with targeted distribution to seniors and children.
• Home Energy Assistance: keeps households safe and warm with help paying heating bills, securing discounts on utility bills, and accessing energy conservation programs.
• Energy Conservation: lowers utility costs for low-income households by increasing home heating/cooling efficiency.
• Transportation: older adults and people with disabilities access vital medical care and human services with door-to-door transportation in handicap-accessible vehicles.
• South Shore Early Education: infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children receive comprehensive, whole-child early education and care, while parents receive adult education, employment training, and family supports.
• South Shore Family Network: children and parents learn and grow through community-based activities focused on early literacy, STEM, social-emotional development, and parenting.
• Volunteer Income Tax Assistance: low-income tax payers make the most of their hard-earned income with IRS-certified volunteers who prepare and electronically file state and federal income tax returns at no charge.
• Consumer Aid: mediation and information to resolve consumer complaints.
Each year, SSCAC serves 28,000 low-income people from the South Shore, South Coast, Cape Cod and the Islands. Each year, roughly half of our clients are 60 years and older, one quarter have a disability, 6% are active military or veterans, and nearly one-third have a household income less than 100% of the federal poverty level.
