The Hurricane Island Outward Bound School is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing transformative outdoor education experiences for individuals of all ages. Our purpose is to inspire personal growth, facilitate leadership development, and foster a deep appreciation for nature and the environment. Outward Bound’s mission is to change lives through challenge and discovery.
Our mission is predicated on the belief that values are experienced concretely rather than taught abstractly; that when the makeup of a crew crosses racial, economic, or religious lines differences are celebrated, appreciated, and valued.
At Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, our goals are twofold. First, we strive to empower individuals to discover their own potential and develop essential life skills through challenging outdoor experiences. Through our programs, participants are pushed outside of their comfort zones, encouraged to take risks, and supported in their personal development journey. Secondly, we aim to cultivate a sense of stewardship and environmental responsibility in our participants. We believe that by immersing individuals in the natural world, we can instill a deep appreciation for the environment and inspire them to become active advocates for its preservation. Our programs encompass a wide range of activities including backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, sailing, and more. These experiences are carefully designed to promote teamwork, resilience, self-reliance, and problem-solving skills. Participants learn to overcome challenges, build strong connections with their peers, and develop a sense of self-confidence that transcends their time with us.
As a non-profit organization, we rely on the generous support of donors and grants to make our programs accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds. This allows us to fulfill our mission of providing life-changing outdoor education experiences to as many people as possible. Through partnerships with schools, community organizations, and corporations, we are able to offer scholarships and financial aid, ensuring that no one is excluded from the transformative opportunities we provide due to financial constraints.
