Civic Repair Lab / Reclaiming SF

di INDEPENDENT ARTS & MEDIA

Civic Repair Lab exists to help communities and civic institutions confront the legacy of racially discriminatory land-use policy — redlining, urban renewal, exclusionary zoning, and displacement — and translate that reckoning into concrete, place-based repair. Civic Repair Lab treats space itself as a site of both harm and healing: policies that dismantled Black neighborhoods were spatial decisions, and repairing them requires spatial strategy and narrative design to support redress.

Core Values
● Space as memory. Physical place carries historical harm and cultural legacy; repair strategies should restore community ties to land, not just distribute compensation.
● Narrative as infrastructure. Reparative policy endures only when it's paired with public narrative work so repair doesn't get erased or forgotten.
● Specificity over symbolism. Repair is only meaningful when it names concrete harms in concrete places and produces concrete remedies.
● Community as the source of expertise. Directly affected residents are authorities on their own history and neighborhood, not just subjects of study.
● Replicability with rigor. Place-based frameworks developed in one community should inform others without flattening the local specificity that makes redress credible.
● Institutional accountability. Civic Repair Lab builds durable policy and process that outlasts any single administration or political moment.
