Founded in April, 1986, the facility is located at 5899 Highway 3112 (Old U.S. Hwy 90) in Southwest Louisiana and close to the Southeast Texas border. We are strategically located on 5 acres of land off US Interstate 10, approximately mid-way between Houston and New Orleans or Los Angeles and Miami. Previously known as Ir-Miklato Way of the Cross A City of Refuge Ministry it was rebranded in 2022 to just Way of the Cross Ministries – “A City of Refuge”. The corporation ministers primarily to the homeless veterans and less fortunate. It has several ministries under its umbrella, those being Home for Heroes Veterans’ Homeless Shelter, housing the homeless Veteran and some homeless. A. Ray’s Manna, provides food and clothing for the residents, and other organizations who feed the homeless and Broken Angel Ministries who assists the veterans and/or spouses in acquring benefits from SS, SSI, SSDI, VA or VA Survivor as well as SNAP benefits.. Each ministry works hand-in-hand to help the veterans and homeless residents who live on campus and on occasion those that may live in the community.
Started as a homeless shelter and church for the Vietnam veterans it now ministers and assists from all eras of war and deployment. Many of the Veterans are referred by local authorities, churches, hospitals or various organizations, including the VA. Many of those who become a resident are from various walks of life and have become estranged from their family due to bad choices they may have made in life. Many are restored, and many relationships are renewed. What once seemed to be irreconcilable becomes reconciled and the Veteran is restored to his friends and family allowing the resident to regain self-worth once again. He then is able to move forward to obtain gainful employment and re-enter society as a productive citizen. Once employed many have found that they are able to acquire a RV and transition to the park adjacent to the shelter, still close to the shelter in case they have a need. No matter what the reason, we believe that no one comes to “A City of Refuge” by accident but by Divine direction. All are treated equal and there is no discrimination.
The residents must abide by a set of rules approved and adopted by its council. We are a non-profit organization, and are registered with the Louisiana Secretary of State. Our EIN is #92-1863621.
Each year a fundraiser is held to help defray the costs of the month-to-month expenditures, help with the upkeep of the facility, to pay monthly obligations, obtain insurance with a specific project always in mind. One currently is to help with the purchase of a new van.
