Who We Are
Unsung Heroes of America (UHOA) is a veteran-led 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit based in Atlanta, Georgia (EIN 47-3982494). Founded on December 12, 2016, by U.S. Army veteran and former Staff Sergeant Jermaine Bullard Sr. — a logistics NCO with three Iraq deployments — UHOA was built on a simple conviction: no American who served this country should sleep without a roof over their head.
Our Mission
To end veteran homelessness in metro Atlanta by providing homeless veterans and their families with transitional housing, wraparound supportive services, and a dignified path home.
Who We Serve
Our priority population is homeless and housing-insecure U.S. military veterans and their immediate family members across DeKalb County, Fulton County, and the broader metro Atlanta footprint. We serve veterans of every era, every branch, and every discharge status — including the family members who are too often invisible in official counts.
What We Do
UHOA operates two integrated program lines:
1. Direct Housing Operations — In partnership with our affiliate Lewis and Lyon Veteran Housing, UHOA is developing transitional housing in DeKalb County, pairing safe furnished units with case management, VA benefits navigation, employment coaching, and life-skills support.
2. Supportive Services & Referral Agency — For veterans we cannot house directly, UHOA is a single front door to the full continuum of federal, state, and community resources: VA pensions (including the often-missed Aid & Attendance), SSVF, HUD-VASH, SSDI, VR&E Chapter 31, food assistance, and legal aid. We walk alongside every veteran until they are stably housed.
Signature Programs
• Winter Warm-Up — Our annual holiday distribution event providing coats, hot meals, toys, and benefits enrollment for homeless and low-income veteran families across metro Atlanta.
• Toys for Tots Partnership — Each December, UHOA partners with the Atlanta Toys for Tots campaign to make sure the children of veteran families have presents under the tree.
• Veterans Resources Hub — A continuously updated library of federal, state, and local veteran benefits published to unsungheroesofamerica.org.
Partners
UHOA is a member of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and in active partnership with the DeKalb County Continuum of Care, the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center, Team Depot / The Home Depot Foundation, and CORT Furniture.
How Your Gift Helps
• $50 funds a veteran's first week of groceries after move-in.
• $250 covers utilities activation for a newly housed family.
• $1,000 fully furnishes a transitional housing unit through our CORT partnership.
• $5,000 underwrites one month of comprehensive case management for a veteran household.
Workplace Giving & Matching Gifts
Many employers match employee donations dollar-for-dollar — or double them. If your company offers a matching gift program, please designate Unsung Heroes of America (EIN 47-3982494) as your recipient. Your company's match turns a $100 gift into $200 or more of direct veteran support, with zero added cost to you.
