Duo Dogs is a national not-for-profit organization that trains and connects dogs with people to cultivate positive change in individuals, families, and communities. Accredited by Assistance Dogs International (ADI), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Duo Dogs opens the doors to independence by providing Assistance Dogs to individuals with physical challenges, Facility Dogs to those in need of emotional assurance, and Touch Dogs that bring encouragement, reading assistance to area students, and educational programming to schools and businesses.
Over the course of approximately two years, Duo Dogs trains Mobility, Hearing and PTSD service dogs. Mobility dogs assist clients with activities like opening and closing doors, picking up dropped items, retrieving objects, undressing, and carrying bags. Hearing dogs alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing to important sounds such as doorbells, alarms, and phones. PTSD dogs serve local Veterans with a diagnosis of PTSD. The goal of these placements is to increase our client’s independence. Our dogs perform trained skills to complete specific tasks that are otherwise difficult or impossible for our client’s to complete because of their identified disabilities.
Duo’s uniquely trained Facility Dogs do important community work, impacting people of all ages. These amazing animals are partnered with licensed or certified workers that have been trained and certified as handlers by Duo Dogs to be used in therapeutic interactions with vulnerable populations. Many of Duo's Facility Dogs are placed in Child Advocacy Centers/CASAs, hospitals, schools, and within the court system.
The Duo Touch Therapy program trains and certifies volunteers and their personal dogs to visit hospitals, treatment centers, residential facilities and schools throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. Their job can be simple (like brightening the day of everyone they encounter) or specific (acting as an effective motivational tool during physical therapy sessions).
All services provided by Duo Dogs are provided at no cost to the individual. Duo Dogs is a fixture in the St. Louis community and is proud to be able to serve by changing lives each and every day.
