Pittsburgh Hires Veterans was founded in 2016 and today is led by a star-studded Board of Directors comprised almost entirely of veterans or current military personnel. Additionally, all PHV staff members have military connections and an understanding of issues encountered in the transition from military life to life as a civilian.
PHV provides vital career readiness services to veterans that bridge the gap left by the military Transition Assistance Program. Virtually no one in the military has experienced the challenges of finding employment in the civilian sector, let alone gained success there. For example, military personnel do not apply for or interview for jobs nor do they negotiate their salary. Their career path is somewhat predetermined based on their
military occupational specialty (MOS). When service members leave the military, they need training. They need to learn how to write a resume and how to translate their military skills into civilian skills. They need to learn how to describe their skills in ways that will be attractive to and understood by a civilian employer. Qualities like:
problem solving, leadership, ethics and time management are inherently part of the veteran's skill set, and veterans need to learn how to convey those qualities to employers in a meaningful way.
PHV board and staff are committed to serving veterans who reside in southwest PA and those moving to the area--including veteran students, spouses, military service members, the National Guard and Reserves. PHV’s programming ensures that local veterans and military service members can continue with the next mission of their lives – contributing to society and supporting themselves and their families through meaningful employment.
