'An Order from the Sky' is an Indo-U.S. co-production, spiritual drama that was filmed as a single shot for 75 minutes with only one character on screen. It is the first film of this kind in the world and has been honored by the International and India Book of Records. The film was shot inside a real rural shrine in India, and the story is deeply connected to the culture and emotions of people living there.
The film follows a small time thief who spends one long morning speaking to a deity and asking for a sign to steal. His conversation with the shrine becomes a conversation with his own fears and doubts. It is a simple story but it reflects the common human feeling of looking for meaning, reassurance and hope. The film is inspired by the writing of Imayam and the performance is done in one continuous shot by an actor trained in the Koothu Pattarai theatre tradition.
During the making of the film something beautiful happened in real life. The deity idol made only as a prop was accepted by the villagers as a real guardian spirit and is now worshipped permanently in the producer’s hometown. The production became a collaboration with rural communities who welcomed the team and guided the traditional customs. Natural elements like sunlight wind and even a trained hen became part of the scene after many months of rehearsal.
This fundraising request is for the cultural outreach of the film including press releases publicity media coverage and theatrical screenings in the United States. The goal is to bring a small rural Indian story to global audiences who rarely get to see this side of India on screen.
