Committal Shelter Structural Improvement Fund

di SOUTHERN MAINE VETERANS MEMORIAL CEMETERY ASSOCIATION

The non-denominational committal shelter at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery serves as the ceremonial space where families gather to honor their loved ones during interment services. For many years, families were left standing in harsh New England weather—wind, snow, rain, and cold—with no protection during these solemn moments.

To address this concern, our Association successfully raised approximately $46,000 to complete Phase One of a three-phase plan. This first phase included enclosing the back and both side walls of the shelter in glass, offering meaningful protection and comfort while maintaining the open feel of the space.

We are now moving into Phase Two, which involves installing a glass triangular panel and a structural cross beam. This essential work will prepare the shelter for Phase Three, which will add glass doors across the front. Once completed, the shelter will offer full weather protection for families while preserving an unobstructed view of the U.S., State of Maine, and POW/MIA flags flying proudly in front of the shelter.

Estimated cost for Phase Two: $25,000

Goal: Complete Phase Two of the shelter enclosure and move toward full weather protection

Why It Matters:

* Shields families from the elements during all seasons
* Improves the dignity and comfort of interment services
* Preserves clear sightlines to the cemetery’s prominent flag display
* Demonstrates long-term commitment to honoring veterans and their loved ones
