Healthy Men, Healthy Families

par AFRICAN AMERICAN PROSTATE CANCER INITIATIVE

Annual cancer screening and wellness event targeting hard-to-reach populations. AAPCI is the fiscal sponsor of the event that involves a collaboration--the 28 organizations that comprise the Sacramento Community Cancer Coalition and student-run health clinics through the University of California at Davis Health System. Each of the student clinics has a mission focused on a particular under-served demographic such as: LGBT, Homeless, African American, Muslim, Asian American etc.... The Sacramento Community Cancer Coalition also includes organizations such as Kaiser, 100 Black Men, The Komen Foundation, American Cancer Association and NAACP, Every Women Counts and Albie Aware to name a few of the 28 participating agencies.
The screenings are free and include: cancer, vision, dental. Participants who get at least one screening are able to go through and stuff fresh fruit and vegetables in a sports bag with wellness gifts such as masks, sanitizer and pedometers.
We look for financial support to cover the cost of the annual event that takes place over 2 weeks. We are in need of funding to expand the dental services portion of the event. We have to turn away most attendees who need services beyond what we can provide in the field such as root canals and dentures.
The SCCC Healthy Men, Healthy Families serves families across a nine-county region in Northern California including: Yolo, Sonoma, Solano, Placer, Yuba, Sutter, Colusa, Butte and Sacramento.
