The Cavalla Historical Foundation, or CHF, is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization that manages and maintains Galveston Naval Museum at Seawolf Park. Both the USS Cavalla and the USS Stewart on the National Register of Historic Places. The Museum supervises the care and preservation of the USS Cavalla and the USS Stewart, as well as many other historical WWII-era artifacts.
Both vessels were nearly scrapped, but community members and volunteers in the Galveston, Texas area came together and saved both ships. They were turned into an educational museum for visitors of all ages over 20 years ago. The Galveston Naval Museum is open for visitors seven days a week. Guests can explore both ships as they desire, with educational displays and exhibits throughout both ships. The Museum welcomes over 50,000 visitors annually.
With the support of the Board, the Executive Director, a team of full-time and part-time employees, and over 200 unique volunteers annually, we're able to provide several extra-special experiences for visitors. Most popular are the "Overnights" and the Hard Hat Tours.
During Overnights, groups of up to 40 guests can spend the night at the Museum and sleep in the same space that Navy sailors did over 75 years ago! Popular with community groups and youth organizations, these are always in-demand!
Hard Hat Tours are guided by one of our team members and get into smaller and tighter spaces that aren't generally open to the public for safety reasons. These are available on a limited basis depending on the preservation and restoration status of these areas on the ships, as well as the availability of a qualified team member.
We've hosted many events at the Museum, including weddings. We also hold memorial events on appropriate holidays to honor Veterans of the United States Armed Services.
