Since our inception in 1985, Habitat for Humanity Sarasota has been instrumental in significantly transforming affordable housing in Sarasota. Habitat Sarasota has successfully built and renovated over 400 affordable homes for low-income first-time homeowners within the community. This remarkable achievement is a testament to our unwavering devotion to our vision that "Everyone deserves a decent place to live."
Habitat Sarasota builds permanent, affordable homes in partnership with the community for income-qualified families. To qualify, applicants must have a household income not exceeding 80% area median income. Habitat homebuyers provide "sweat equity" (volunteer hours) to help build their own home alongside volunteers. Habitat Sarasota offers each family a series of workshops designed to help them succeed as first-time homebuyers. Workshop topics include, but are not limited to, budget planning; estate planning; healthy meal preparation; homeowner's insurance, mortgage documents, homestead exemption; and home maintenance, as well as, a HUD-certified 8-hour first-time homebuyers class.
