The Housing Resource Center of Monterey County (HRC) has been helping homeless people of Monterey and San Benito counties obtain and maintain safe, affordable housing since 1984. Our programs serve homeless seniors, Veterans and Veteran families, and families with children, including those difficult to house. The agency also helps stabilize families and individuals at risk of becoming homeless.
Many of our clients do not have sufficient income to pay for minimum basic needs, such as food and shelter, and are forced to make difficult, heart-breaking choices to survive. And, nearly 300 households who call HRC each month for assistance must, unfortunately, be turned away, due to lack of sufficient funding. These families and individuals often have nowhere else to turn.
HRC focuses on eradicating barriers to affordable housing in all of its programs by providing intense case management, financial assistance and financial literacy education for clients, providing them with the tools to become self-sufficient.
Lower income households who must overpay to secure adequate shelter must use large portions of their discretionary income just to meet their basic shelter needs. This leaves less income for discretionary expenditures to help them improve themselves and to build a future for their children.
Each homeless person is a unique individual, with unique circumstances and challenges; no two situations are the same. Despite the variety and complexity of these challenges, HRC has an excellent track record in the community of securing housing solutions. In 2015, for example, HRC successfully housed 501 households (1,489 individuals), including many homeless Veterans and their families; and formerly homeless CalWorks families with children.
HRC coordinates services with over 75 regional partners, including service providers, local governments (cities and county), faith-based organizations, professional associations and landlords. Currently, the agency has housing placements with over 77 local landlords and property owners.
In addition to providing safe and affordable housing for homeless people, promoting housing stability has a significant and positive impact on stabilizing communities; economic growth; and reducing gang and criminal activity, as well as reducing the cost of city, health and emergency services.
