The Friends of the National World War II Memorial brings people together to showcase the World War II Memorial as a singular place in the United Sates that commemorates World War II and its veterans and the time in our history when the home front was unified in support of our service members efforts on the battlefront and to bring freedom to millions around the globe and to share the stories of the men and women who represented Americans at their very best and the unity, shared values and ideals, and the spirit of community they exemplified.
To accomplish this, Friends:
- Hosts annual commemorations, both in-person and online, to remember and to honor the 16-million-strong men and women who wore the uniform of the U.S. Armed Forces during WWII and who took on the fight to bring freedom to millions around the globe.
- Develops and leads successful character-based education and community service programming using the lessons and legacies of the everyday men and women of the WWII generation and stressing the values and spirit of our Greatest Generation, including: an annual summer teachers conference; community service projects across the country; monthly virtual education conference series; and bringing a New York Times bestselling author to high schools.
- Presents both in-person and online, an annual legacy lecture series featuring preeminent historians and scholars speaking on the lasting significance and impact of World War II on America and the world.
- Presents the annual BGEN Charles E. McGee Unity Award to an individual or group that exemplifies the spirit of unity and shared values that were prevalent during World War II.
- Hosts group trips to Normandy led by best-selling author Alex Kershaw.
Additionally, Friends continues to capture interviews with World War II veterans; profile hundreds of WWII veterans on our social media channels; works with a tremendous group of dedicated volunteers; and much more.
