What: Multimedia reporting projects that combine reported digital stories (web) and audio to illustrate what's happening with and to women throughout America today. Why: When the dust settled after the 2016 election, plenty of pundits pointed at the "media bubble," blaming the near-total miss of any predictions of Trump's win on the fact that most newsrooms are dominated by urban liberals. But as data analysts dug deeper, they found this wasn't exactly true. The media bubble, it turned out, was more geographic than strictly demographic. In the past 10 years, the country has lost more than half of its local newspapers. That's led to a consolidation of news in a small handful of markets (namely, New York, D.C. and, to a lesser extent, Los Angeles), and a total loss of perspectives from outside those places. At the same time, the demographics of media remain disproportionately led by white men. In turn, the narratives in reporting don't accurately reflect a majority of Americas
How: Each month we will select a different reporting topic around which we’ll build an editorial package. The reporting package will be anchored in written reported journalism published on the DAME website, and may be supplemented with audio and/or video reporting.
Who: We are committed to hiring local journalists and subject matter expert journalists in the areas and topics we are covering, and plan to link our print reporters up with our audio reporters.
Partners: When relevant, we will partner with additional outlets for each topic to expand reach of each reporting package. For example, for our first package, The 51 we partnered with Civil Eats, and have partnered with Economic Hardship Reporting Project, and pursuing a variety of other new partnerships as well.
