FRINGE BENEFITS ALLIANCE

Los Angeles, California

Fringe Benefits is an educational theatre company dedicated to early hate crime prevention. We have a 30-year track record of collaborating with schools and community groups on creative projects that replace hate with understanding. !--break--> Every year, Fringe Benefits works with hundreds of students and other community members, locally, nationally and internationally to create plays, videos and programs that promote constructive dialogue about diversity and discrimination issues. We develop programs in response to requests from schools and communities looking for creative ways to address social injustice. We are committed to opening hearts and minds and promoting progressive action around a wide array of social justice issues including racism, sexism, classism, ableism, ageism, immigration rights, and LGBTQ+ issues. We believe that it is imperative for disenfranchised communities to come together, listen to each other’s concerns, stories and ideas, and work together to frame their/our own narratives. Working together, we stand a better chance of being heard and heeded. !--break--> In all of our work, our goal is to create a context in which people can transform their damaging experiences with discrimination into art and dialogue that promote respect, inclusion and justice. Our partnerships have helped inspire schools to end discriminatory policies. Our work with students and educators—from Los Angeles to Iowa City to Bundaberg, Australia—has prompted schools to end sexist, classist, ableist and racist policies, and garnered an unprecedented level of positive press and support for LGBTQ+ youth. Our programs have introduced LGBTQ+ issues and history to students, Kindergarten-through-12th grade, and have inspired numerous schools to integrate these subjects permanently into their curricula. Thanks in part to our partnerships, North Carolina youth obtained emergency housing; formerly incarcerated women in California found employment; New Hampshire Rotarians decided to support marriage equality; high school students in Winnipeg, Canada learned ally-empowering strategies from their Indigenous peers; and a university in Texas audited their accessibility issues and subsequently installed automatic doors, ramps, and curb-cuts throughout the campus. !--break--> ' Fringe Benefits is committed to building bridges of understanding between diverse communities and enlarging and strengthening our alliance of people who are actively working to end all forms of discrimination. !--break--> "I am a supporter of Fringe Benefits because I share their belief that through theatre, we can get to know and understand each other in all of our diverse beauty, and work together to create a peaceful and loving world." Joanne Woodward, Actress and Advisory Board Member!--break--> "Hateful behavior is a learned behavior. My son's murderers learned from their environment. But loving behavior can also be taught. By working with communities to find creative and positive responses to intolerance and bigotry, Fringe Benefits helps replace hate with understanding." Judy Shepard, mother of Matthew Shepard
