Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center New Indoor Arena Capital Project

Over the past 20 years, Healing Reins has not only sustained itself, but has grown significantly. To accommodate this growth and usher in another 20 years of growth, we are raising funds to build a second indoor arena. The new arena will allow us to:

● Meet current needs more effectively for individuals who experience disabilities and special needs
● Expand our mental health clinic
● Create new recreational programs
● Improve our quality of service

All of these together would contribute to increased revenue and retaining our status as a preferred provider by referring
agencies.

The Need For Expanded Services and Facilities:
We were considering the possibility of having to build an additional arena before COVID19 hit and then the pandemic accelerated what was already a robust pace for population growth in Central Oregon. Social distancing, distance learning and the related isolation have increased the demand for our services. With the combination of continued population growth, and the stressful state of the world, there are not enough counseling clinics in Central Oregon to support the current mental health needs, especially for youth. We have waitlists for all our programs because we do not have the space to accommodate everyone. Long, harsh winters in Central Oregon mean we need to keep everyone safe from winter elements in order to operate year-round. If we do not build a new arena, we are at immediate risk of our waitlists continuing to grow, children not receiving early intervention when needed, and clients seeking service elsewhere. These would put us at further risk of quality of service potentially declining and staff turnover increasing.

The Opportunity:
In March 2021, one of our board members helped us identify a construction supply company, Titan Steel, that produces “arena kits.” At a time when construction material costs have been fluctuating rapidly, Titan Steel offered us a very attractive discount
on an arena kit and we decided to act on this one-time only opportunity. We chose a 65’ x 145’ arena with a shed row for grooming stalls and a viewing room. We expect to receive the arena kit in September 2021 and prepare the arena footing in the fall of 2021. Weather and funding permitting, we will construct the kit over the winter and spring of 2021 - 2022. The new arena will be located at our headquarters location on Billadeau Road in Bend, Oregon.

Capital Needs:
The cost of constructing the new arena is estimated at $489,500, of which we have already raised $204,500 (41%) from money we specifically set aside for this project, local foundations and group giving, and private funding.

Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center is a 501c3 public charity in Bend, Oregon. Our mission is “to heal with horses” by offering nationally accredited, affordable, horse-centered therapies and experiences that bring strength, independence, confidence and joy to Central Oregonians of all ages and abilities. Our primary activities are Therapeutic Horsemanship, Physical Therapy using equine movement, and Equine Assisted Mental Health. We currently serve 170 participants per week and 1,400 families per year.

The new arena would double that capacity, allowing us to serve everyone without financial barriers and without a waitlist. We are working diligently to make this vision a reality and we will be honored to have your support now as we pursue this important and impactful goal.
