The Mouth House Kids Literacy Program will consist of 55 students from Daisy Bates Elementary, Landmark Elementary, and Mills Middle schools. These students have been identified as having low test school overall when it comes to literacy, math and reading compared to their counterparts in other areas of the county. In Pulaski County, 29% of elementary students tested at or below proficient level for reading, and 34% tested at or below in math, ranking Pulaski County school in the bottom 20% in the nation. These student have also been identified as living at or below the poverty level. It is evident that students who live at or below poverty level do not have adequate resources that consist of after-school or summer enrichment programs. Studies also show that students living at or below the poverty level do not have adequate food supplies which causes the students inadequately learn. The Mouth House Kids Literacy Program will provide these resources to the students, including an afterschool meal, and resource guides to the family for additional support.
