NATION FUND FOR INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM INC

The Nation Fund for Independent Journalism was founded in 2020 to house and implement The Nation magazine’s educational and work development programs. The Nation Fund’s programs include:

1) The Victor S. Navasky Internship: Widely regarded as one of the finest internships in the country, the internship embeds early-career journalists in The Nation’s newsroom to learn about all the aspects of what it takes to publish a magazine, from pitching, editing and fact-checking to the business of journalism.
2) The Puffin Nation Fund Student Writing Fellowship: Ten college students from around the country receive editorial and fact-checking training, mentorship, networking opportunities, and support in publishing their writing. Student journalists report on specific, dedicated subject areas/beats, all with mentoring by relevant veteran writers offering advice and contacts.
3) StudentNation: StudentNation publishes more than 100 pieces of original content by student journalists on The Nation magazine’s website, including first-person accounts of campus campaigns, local student reporting, and coverage of legislative issues relevant to students and young people.
4) Puffin Nation Fund Student Journalism Conference: The conference convenes speakers from the most dynamic and innovative media outfits nationwide to talk to student journalists about the history, role and craft of journalism through workshops, discussions, seminars, video screenings, breakout sessions, networking opportunities and social activities.
5) Nation Classroom: This program brings The Nation magazine’s renowned archives to life in high school classrooms. Nation Classroom makes available writing from luminaries such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Langston Hughes, WEB Du Bois, William Pickens, and James Baldwin in the form of student materials and teacher resources.
6) The Fellowship for the Future of Journalism: High School Writing Fellowship supports at seven writing fellows from New York City public schools. Throughout the two-year fellowship, fellows learn about the tenets and foundations of journalism, receive mentorship and close editing feedback from dedicated journalism professionals, network with their peers and other student journalists, and much more.

The Nation Fund nurtures the next generation of independent journalists. Our programs act as career accelerators for young, early-career independent journalists. We foster long relationships with alumni, like Ari Berman, Aviva Stahl, Sarah Jaffe, D.D. Guttenplan, Amy Wilentz, and David Corn. Fellows and interns have gone on to lead newsrooms, produce powerful documentaries, and publish award-winning journalism and books. Their work has gone on to influence and inform millions at virtually every significant media outlet in the U.S., including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, The New Yorker, the Los Angeles Times, and the Wall Street Journal, as well as CNN, MSNBC, and NPR.
