Opened in 2017, Desert Sky Montessori is the only free Montessori school in Central Oregon, and serves 180 students in grades K- 6. We aim to guide children in discovering their unique gifts, and in building their confidence to share their gifts with the world. Montessori learning approaches help develop children into adults who can operate in this complex world with a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset.
We are a non-profit and public charter Montessori school in the Bend-La Pine School District. Most Montessori schools in the U.S. are private and serve preschool students. We wanted all families in our community to have the equitable access to a Montessori education. We offer a lottery-based enrollment system, just as the neighborhood schools do, which gives everyone a fair chance, no matter their socio-economic or health status.
We offer an alternative education approach to those offered at the District level and our lottery wait list last year was the highest it's been since we opened. Families are attracted to other options like ours, especially families who have children with learning disabilities, children with "challenging" behaviors, children who are talented and gifted, etc. - children who think and behave differently than the norm.
We offer a high-integrity Montessori program including beautifully organized classrooms, uninterrupted daily work periods, a high degree of freedom of movement in the classroom, mixed-age classrooms, higher adult-child ratios (2 educators per classroom), and Montessori trained educators.
Our 5 year vision is to make our K-6 programming whole by securing sustainable funding for our Dean of Students and Intervention Specialists, adding a free meal program, and adding enrichment programming such as American Sign Language or Spanish, art and music. It also includes taking initial steps to purchase a suitable property for which to house a CTE Middle School Program.
Part of our10-year vision is to expand service to include a Montessori Middle School.
