A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, causing widespread destruction across several communities. At least 111 people have died, buildings and critical infrastructure were severely damaged, and many remain trapped beneath debris.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Chocó region, west of Bogotá, with significant impacts reported in Pereira, Quibdó, Cali, and Manizales. Tremors were also felt beyond Colombia, including in parts of Ecuador and Panama.

Thousands may now face urgent needs for food, clean water, medical care, emergency shelter, and other essential assistance. Recovery will continue long after the immediate emergency passes.

Direct Relief is monitoring urgent medical needs and responding to requests from local organizations. The organization brings significant experience in Colombia, where it has provided more than $27 million in medical assistance since 2015.
