HicksStrong Inc. began its work in 2019 after the tragic suicide of Macoy Hicks, an active duty member of the US Navy who suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). At the time of his death, he was just 20 years old. In response to this loss, Macoy’s parents and his sister joined with their friends and community members to create HicksStrong with the mission - to save military lives.
To fulfill this mission, HicksStrong links veterans and active-duty military members with qualified, licensed, confidential mental health therapy services via Telehealth and covers the cost as well as providing each of them with Hug Mugs, so that they feel less isolated and can receive the care that they so urgently need - regardless of where they are.
Over the past two and a half years, the agency has provided over 3200 therapy sessions to over 500 military members and sent out over 4000 Hug Mugs.
Of those participating in therapy services:
42% were women and 58% were men
40% suffered from PTSD
14% were suicidal
11% were abusing alcohol or drugs
Represented all branches of the military
The organization currently utilizes the services of four licensed therapists to provide mental health services at a reduced hourly rate. A total of 125 volunteers have helped create the one-of-a-kind Hug Mugs. In 2022, the organization is poised to respond to increasing demand by providing over 3200 therapy sessions to nearly 500 military members and delivering over 4000 Hug Mugs.
In addition, HicksStrong will be adding a new Education & Outreach program that will be traveling the country, providing suicide intervention training as well as connecting other veteran groups, military organizations, and the community with resources.
