Whiskers for Wounded Warriors is an organization that understands freedom is a right given to us, but not without the sacrifice of others. Our goal is to raise awareness for wounded veterans, to help all veterans and to educate others as to the needs of many of our military men and women. Through direct contributions to individuals, their families and other groups caring for veterans, we say, “Thank you for your service and our freedom.”
The organization’s income is derived from public donations and fundraising opportunities. Dispersal of its income is by decision of the Board of Directors and the Treasurer, whose power to pay expenses is set out by the Bylaws in accordance with the organization’s purpose. Expenses paid by the organization may include, but are not limited to: funds toward the cause of helping veterans, equipment purchases and rentals, internet web site fees, advertising, and miscellaneous board expenses.
Educational Opportunities. The organization has countless educational opportunities. Whether it is speaking with church groups, other organizations supporting veterans, or individuals at our booth during a community event or fundraiser, we strive to tell our story with the hope others will support and commit to our cause.
VA Hospital Visits. The organization regularly visits with veterans each month at the Dallas VA Medical Center. These one-on-one visits help us recognize where someone may have a need upon leaving the hospital or rehab.
Whiskers for Wounded Warriors Board of Directors is currently engaging the Dallas VA Medical Center, through volunteer services and the hospice department, to set up a program to be known as No Vet Dies Alone. The organization would have visitation privileges in the hospice care area to visit with veterans whose time is short and provide support to family members if present. Members of our organization would be available on short notice to be present when the time comes.
Veterans Assistance. Whiskers for Wounded Warriors, after having many requests for information, has produced a list of phone numbers for veterans. Whether it is an internal problem at the VA Dallas facility or who to call about disability claims, hopefully, we have a phone number for them.
Time of Need. After seeing how difficult it can sometimes be to get answers from the Veterans Administration and to navigate through their website, Whiskers for Wounded Warriors developed an In Time of Need guide. With verbiage, direct from and links to the specific areas on the VA website or offsite locations, loved ones are guided step-by-step for preparing in advance and burial in a national cemetery. There is also a section with frequently asked questions.
Whiskers for Wounded Warriors believes "service to our country" extends to the family. We have been with family members at removal of life support, helping with funeral arrangements, and attending funerals at private and National Cemeteries. We stay in touch with the deceased veteran's family to help in any way we can.
