The original vision and impetus for New Hope came from the people of Christ Church Cathedral-Episcopal. New Hope’s creation responded to the Cathedral’s concern to improve the living conditions of their homeless and near-homeless neighbors. With that goal in mind, New Hope was established as an independent, non-profit corporation in 1993. We have grown into Texas’ leading provider of single room occupancy (SRO) housing. With almost 1,000 units of SRO rental housing at seven properties in Houston, New Hope’s award-winning brand has been recognized locally, nationally, and internationally. This recognition not only confirms the quality of our properties, it also evidences the community’s embrace of our Housing + Services model as a creative solution to meet the needs of a wide range of vulnerable people. Our residents include the working poor, seniors, youth aging out of foster care, veterans, women fleeing domestic violence, and those with mental and/or physical disabilities.
This is a pivotal time for New Hope Housing. In spring 2016, we broke ground on NHH at Harrisburg, a 175-unit mixed use development offering single room occupancy (SRO) housing on the light rail in the rapidly gentrifying East End. This TOD property will include retail and commercial office space and be located just past the BBVA Compass soccer stadium. We anticipate a grand opening in November 2017. In fall 2016, we broke ground on NHH at Reed, our first affordable, supportive housing for at-risk families. This 187-unit property will contain 1, -2 and -3 bedroom apartments, located adjacent to Star of Hope’s 41-acre services campus south of the 610 Loop and west of Highway 288. Both endeavors continue our Housing + Services philosophy that takes a smart, efficient approach to the very human problem of permanent, affordable supportive housing. New Hope is an award-winning organization, recognized nationally and internationally, that will soon own and operate almost 1,200 units of housing. We thank our donors, stakeholders and social service partners for their continuing support as we forge a bright future filled with the power of collaboration and dedication changing lives every day.
