The 26.5 Experience is a powerful mobile outreach project launched by Renewed Inc., built on redemption, purpose, and community transformation. Housed inside a retrofitted MCI E4500 motorcoach, this mobile barber bus delivers free grooming services, mentorship, and direct access to life-changing resources to underserved populations across Chicago and its surrounding suburbs—including the homeless, veterans, returning citizens, and at-risk youth.
The name “26.5” honors the personal journey of one of the project's directors, who spent 26.5 years incarcerated and emerged with a vision to give back, empower others, and break cycles of poverty, violence, and incarceration. The bus is a moving symbol of second chances—a mobile platform for healing, dignity, and hope.
Inside the bus, individuals receive free haircuts, hygiene kits, reentry support, trauma-informed referrals, and job readiness resources. Each visit provides not only self-care but a sense of belonging and motivation to reengage with life’s opportunities. Through partnerships with local workforce agencies, including WIOA programs, participants can also access employment training and reintegration support.
Fully ADA-compliant and staffed by licensed barbers, coaches, and community leaders, The 26.5 Experience is projected to serve over 2,000 individuals annually. More than just a mobile salon—it’s a testament to transformation and a vehicle for empowerment, renewal, and justice.
