San Diego Habitat for Humanity

San Diego Habitat for Humanity builds and repairs homes in partnership with low-income families, volunteers, and generous donors. The following provides a brief overview of the many programs we offer:

New Construction: San Diego Habitat builds simple, affordable homes for low-income families in need. We are currently on schedule to complete 13 new homes in Fiscal Year 2015, impacting the lives of 40-50 adults and children.

Partner Families for these new homes commit to 250-500 hours of “sweat equity,” assisting in building their own home and the homes of their neighbors. These new homes are sold to Partner Families at no profit, and all homes are financed by an interest-free 25-30 year mortgage. This model of sustainability ensures that San Diego Habitat is able to continue building and repairing homes for those in need, impacting the lives of families for generations to come.

Rehabs: In an effort to help alleviate blight in our communities, San Diego Habitat implemented its Rehab program, purchasing existing homes and rehabilitating them for purchase by low-income families. This program has enabled San Diego Habitat to increase the number of needy families it is able to impact. In addition, once the rehabilitated homes are sold to low-income families, those funds are used to purchase more homes, thereby creating a perpetual cycle of resources that allows San Diego Habitat to impact a greater number of families throughout San Diego County.

We are on track to rehabilitate and complete four homes in Fiscal Year 2015, thereby impacting nearly 20 adults and children for generations while simultaneously generating funds for our other construction programs.

Repair Corps: Initiated in 2012 as a partnership between The Home Depot Foundation and Habitat for Humanity, Repair Corps is focused on addressing critical health and safety issues in homes where veterans reside. Not only are veterans identified as an underserved population; they are often either elderly or disabled as well. This year, San Diego Habitat for Humanity will be repairing and/or modifying the homes of 12 veterans and their families, with a goal of serving 24 families in 2016.

Neighborhood Revitalization: Our Neighborhood Revitalization program seeks to bring people together to create a vision for a better place to live. Through this program, we partner with whole communities to improve their quality of life by providing expanded services, establishing and maintaining partnerships, and giving residents the resources they need to maintain their improved community for generations. San Diego Habitat will make repairs to 15 homes in Fiscal Year 2015 through this program, while also making improvements throughout the community to have a greater impact. Examples of these additional improvements include reclaiming and revitalizing parks within the community, partnering with local agencies to provide resources for local families, and offering job training and educational opportunities for local homeowners and their families. San Diego Habitat plans to significantly expand this program in Fiscal Year 2016, with a goal of repairing 60 homes and providing improvements in their respective communities.

San Diego Habitat for Humanity builds homes, communities, and hope. Through our multiple building and repair programs, we provide homeownership opportunities for low-income families while also offering financial and homeownership education that ensures the long-term success of our Partner Families. We also help improve the communities in which we work, offering residents the resources they need to maintain their improved community for generations.
