1) Administering extramural funding in support of biomedical, clinical, and rehabilitation research activities at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center (JJPVAMC) and the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System (VAHVHCS). BVMRF-administered research focuses on Veteran specific issues and facilitates Veterans’ access to the latest drugs and state-of-the-art technology that they wouldn’t access otherwise.
2) Supporting education activities aimed at either improving VA personnel’s performance in their duties, or improving Veterans’ and caregivers’ health awareness, such as knowledge in diabetes management, to empower Veterans and their families make healthy lifestyle choices.

The veteran population is unique, with distinct healthcare challenges that set them apart from the civilian population. Many veterans face service-related conditions such as traumatic brain injuries (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), toxic exposure-related illnesses, musculoskeletal injuries, and cardiovascular diseases at rates significantly higher than the general public. The physical and psychological toll of military service, combined with the aging veteran population, creates an urgent need for specialized medical research and tailored treatment approaches.
Despite these pressing health concerns, veterans face significant barriers to accessing clinical trials and experimental treatments that could save or improve their lives. Many life-saving trials conducted by major research institutions are based in private hospitals and academic centers, often requiring private insurance or access to civilian healthcare networks that many veterans lack. The bureaucratic structure of the VA healthcare system, coupled with geographic limitations and a lack of integration with non-VA research institutions, often leaves veterans excluded from the latest advancements in medicine.
BVMRF and other VA-affiliated nonprofits play a critical role in overcoming these barriers by integrating groundbreaking research directly within the VA healthcare system. By securing funding from public, private, and philanthropic sources, BVMRF facilitates clinical trials specifically designed for veterans, ensuring that they benefit from the latest treatments for conditions that disproportionately affect them. Through partnerships with leading scientists, universities, and medical institutions, BVMRF ensures that veterans have direct access to cutting-edge therapies without the logistical and financial hurdles they often face in the civilian healthcare system.
