BTru is a service-learning program that uses visual and written creative expression as the primary method for student learning, reflection, and communication. The program engages elementary and middle school students in structured, school-based experiences designed to build empathy, leadership, and civic responsibility through meaningful engagement with real community needs.
In each program cycle, students participate in guided workshops delivered in partnership with schools and educators. Students explore themes such as gratitude, empathy, and community responsibility, then apply their learning through structured service-learning activities that are translated into visual and written creative work.
Students produce original creative outputs throughout the process, including drawings, posters, designed objects, handwritten messages, and collaborative visual compositions. These works are created as part of completing service-learning projects and serve as tangible expressions of student learning, collaboration, and reflection.
The process emphasizes collaboration, iteration, and reflection. Students develop and refine their work through discussion, feedback, and structured reflection activities, while community partners may participate as collaborators supporting the learning and creative process within school-based settings.
Each project culminates in a school-based sharing experience where students present the work they created throughout the service-learning process. Students explain their projects, reflect on what they learned, and share their creative work with peers, teachers, and sometimes families or school community members.
Future iterations of the program will expand opportunities for deeper student engagement through more complex visual storytelling projects, multi-classroom collaborations, and school-wide sharing experiences that strengthen student voice and connection to community learning.
BTru is delivered through in-class workshops, school-based activities, and culminating sharing experiences, with documentation of student work captured through program materials and digital formats.
