Oakland Ilokana is a short documentary film that aims to illuminate the often-overlooked history and experiences of Filipino Americans through the voices of three generations of Bay Area-born Filipinas. Directed by queer anthropologist and film producer Elenita Makani O’Malley, Oakland Ilokana centers on the life of “Lola” Marie, a 90-year-old Filipina American born in Oakland, California in 1934. As a daughter of the Manong generation—the first major wave of Filipino immigration to the United States—“Lola” Marie is one of the very first Filipina Americans to be born and is now one of the last remaining keepers of that early history.
