Filipino-American Development Foundation

The non profit agency, The Filipino-American Development Foundation manages the Bayanihan Community Center (BCC) as well as other community service programs in the South of Market neighborhood in San Francisco. The BCC is located at the corner of 6th Street and Mission Street in the heart of downtown San Francisco.

COMMUNITY ASSET DEVELOPMENT

Community asset development involves supporting the establishment of physical and social assets:
• Bayanihan Community Center is in the heart of the South of Market neighborhood at 6th Street & Mission Street. The 7,000 square foot center includes the Veterans Equity Center office, community program space & conference room Clients will also be able to access neighborhood information and provide referrals for affordable housing and services available in SF.
• Social Capital is cultivated through volunteerism, civic engagement, and philanthropy.

NONPROFIT FISCAL & SUPPORT SERVICES

FADF strives to develop resources for emerging community organizations that provide services to address the current needs of low-income families. FADF has built capacity to offer fiscal support and resource development for agencies targeting the Filipino population.
FADF provides fiscal support:
• Filipino Community Center in the Excelsior neighborhood, a community facility with programs targeting the concentration of low-income Filipino youth and families in the neighborhood. 950 clients were served in 2015-16. These programs include employment development support, domestic violence, immigration, and after-school programs.
• Pinoy-Pinay Educational Partnerships (PEP) provides in-school academic and Filipino cultural programming targeting Filipino youth at Longfellow & Denman Middle Schools, & Balboa & Burton High Schools in SF. 150 students were served in 2015-16.
• Galing Bata After-School Program at the Filipino Education Center at 824 Harrison Street and at Bessie Carmichael Elementary at 375 – 7th Street; a Filipino cultural enrichment after-school program for children in Kindergarten through 8th grade. 95 students were served in 2015-16.

FADF also helped establish and continues to provide support to the Veterans Equity Center (VEC), a non-profit direct service agency serving the needs of all seniors, with special attention to the low-income Filipino WWII veterans and their spouses. VEC served 800 clients in FY 2015-16.

Cultural Enrichment

CULTURAL & ART EDUCATION PROGRAMS

FADF partners with KulArts, Inc., a nonprofit performing arts & education organization based at the Bayanihan Community Center. KulArts, Inc. produces innovative artistic works; foster mentorship among emerging and established artists; facilitate local and international collaborations; design and implement educational outreach programs for elementary through college age students; lead cultural tours to the Philippines.

NEIGHBORHOOD FESTIVAL

PAROL LANTERN FESTIVAL & PARADE

FADF begins the festival in October with community parol or lantern-making workshops. The series of workshops provides an opportunity for FADF to engage all sectors of the community to participate in a collective community celebration and parade for the neighborhood. Both festivals provide an excellent opportunity for organizations and individuals to cultivate meaningful relationships, thereby strengthening community ties within the neighborhood. This year’s parade will be on December 10, 2016. Beginning October 21, every Friday there are parol-making workshops at the Bayanihan Community Center from 5:30pm-8:30pm.

SAN FRANCISCO FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORIC TOUR (ETHNOTOUR)

Through the assistance of our FADF historian, FADF established a Filipino American Historic Tour in San Francisco. The tour includes a historical context to the Filipino landmarks in San Francisco. Our guide elaborates on the significant contributions and struggles of the Filipinos that immigrated and lived in San Francisco. High school students and ethnic study students from the colleges and universities schedule tours each semester.

FILIPINO CULTURAL HERITAGE DISTRICT IN SAN FRANCISCO - SoMa Pilipinas

FADF has identified more than 25 culturally important sites, buildings, and objects as well as proposed boundaries to establish SoMa Pilipinas.
In April 2016, the SF Board of Supervisors unanimously passed legislation zoning out the area from 2nd Street on the east, to 11th Street on the west and going down from Market Street to Brannan Street as SoMa Pilipinas. This district highlights the long-standing Filipino cultural institutions in the neighborhood as they have served as places of worship, for community services, for arts expression, and as sites for cultural activities and events in the same manner a plaza would function in the Philippines.
