Marine Scout Sniper War Memorial

Marine Scout Sniper Heritage Foundation's most urgent goal is to erect a suitable memorial to honor our war dead of every conflict from World War One to the present. The memorial will be sited at the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park, located just outside the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Virginia. We have commissioned Master Sculptor Sabin Howard to create a two-man scout sniper team in bronze. One figure will be a WWI-era Marine, while the other will represent scout snipers from our most recent war in Afghanistan. These figures will bookend our 105-year history.

Despite our illustrious 105-year history and our participation in every war fought by the United States since 1918, there is currently no monument to honor Marine Scout Snipers who have given their last full measure in combat. We can think of no better place to put such a memorial than right outside the main gate of Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. This is where Scout Snipers were born in the Spring of 1918, and it's where the modern Scout Sniper program led the way and influenced how every other branch of service trains and employs snipers to this day.

In the early days of our history, one of our first Marine Scout Snipers was Corporal John H. Pruitt. Corporal Pruitt was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Blanc Mont Ridge in October, 1918 where he was killed in action "while sniping at the enemy". He is widely regarded as the first US military sniper to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Our small community of warriors has produced two other Medal of Honor recipients and dozens of Navy Cross and Silver Star recipients across all conflicts. Yet, no memorial currently exists to honor fallen Scout Snipers.
