7yr old Raelynn is 1% of kids who get this cancer UPS Sarcoma
de ARMER FOUNDATION FOR KIDSAbout a year and a half ago Raelynn’s parents noticed a small bump in her left calf. She never claimed that it hurt or bothered her. They took her to her pediatrician who then referred her to a dermatologist. An ultrasound imaging was done on it and the dermatologist stated it was most likely a pilomatrixoma and benign. The dermatologist said they could wait until she was ready for excision because it would have to be done awake. Sometime later she was ready and they had it removed and the pathology report came back that it was sarcoma. Raelynn’s parents got an immediate referral to Phoenix Children’s Hospital and she had full body scans done under sedation. A few weeks later they were finally able to meet her oncologist Dr Merjaneh who was so well prepared for our visit and had a plan in place ready to go that day. On this day she diagnosed Raelynn with UPS Sarcoma, a type of cancer seen in patients 50-75. She is of 1% of kids who get this type of cancer.
The treatment plan would be for 6 months. That would be in patient chemotherapy every 21 days for 7 cycles and radiation on her leg for 5 weeks and a surgery phase to remove the remainder of the mass on her leg followed by continuation chemotherapy.
Right now Raelynn has lost all of her hair, but that doesn’t stop her from being the most beautiful and fashionable girl. She has a calendar where they mark off everyday. “She is so resilient and bounces back from chemo like a champ and we are forever stunned by her perseverance and drive” stated Raelynn’s mom.
