The Kevin Bushell Foundation was created after Kevin Sayer Bushell and nine of his fellow sailors tragically lost their lives when there was a collision between an oil tanker and the USS John McCain, a US Navy destroyer. This horrific incident took place on August 21, 2017, in the Singapore Strait. Kevin was well loved by everyone that met him. Soon after the collision, Kevin’s Navy friends initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for a scholarship to be awarded in his name at Gaithersburg High School. The response was so incredible we knew that this goodness needed to continue. In honor of Kevin, our family established this nonprofit to channel our grief into a positive force, helping local students and honoring the schools and communities Kevin loved.
The Kevin Bushell Foundation helps to support the educational aspirations of students in our community by providing scholarships and resources. We award scholarships each year to Gaithersburg High School students—one for those attending Montgomery College and another for those pursuing a four-year college or university education. Additionally, in April the NJROTC at Gaithersburg High School selects a deserving cadet to receive the “Kevin Bushell Cadet of the Year Award”. This award is given to the student that most embodies the Foundation’s motto to “Live the Kev Life…Do Good, Impact Others, Create Change”. The KB Foundation provides that cadet with an honorarium.
Our Foundation also makes a difference at Goshen Elementary School by providing school supplies to students and teachers in need, as well as clothing, shoes, and toiletries for children. Every Veterans Day, we honor Kevin’s legacy by sharing his story—his love for education, his adventures in the Navy, and the importance of honoring our nation’s veterans. We also host an annual clean-up day each year before school starts, giving back to the local community.
In Montgomery County, Maryland, we’ve adopted a road in Kevin’s honor and regularly organize volunteer clean-up events, where we’re always inspired by the community’s participation.
We will continue to honor Kevin through this non-profit and help others in his name. Thank you for your interest in the Kevin Bushell Foundation and always try to “Live the Kev Life”.
