IBERIA HOMELESS SHELTER INC

NEW IBERIA, Louisiana

The inception of Iberia Homeless Shelter was under the leadership of Bishop Edward Joseph O’Donnell of Lafayette Catholic Diocese. In 2002 he summoned local philanthropist ministry community, business, and community civic leaders to this task. In March 2005 the doors to the agency was open. The mission of the Iberia Homeless Shelter is to maintain a clean and safe environment through the Shelter Emergency, Transitional and Re-entry Programs which provides, outreach services, coordinated entry, client support services, intake, assessment and referrals for individuals experiencing a homeless crisis. Our direct focus is to identify and rapidly end chronically homelessness among the most vulnerable individuals and families in Acadiana through a collaborative effort with our regional partners. Through this initiative we encouraged positive life changes with structured programs that focus on life skills, main stream resources, job readiness, skill development, job placement, job placement, substance abuse and mental health referral.

For over Sixteen years, Iberia Homeless Shelter has operated the only emergency shelter for men within the four-parish area of Iberia, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Vermilion. This past year, the shelter has opened its doors to families and females. Outreach and eradicating barriers facing homeless persons seeking permanent housing are the shelter’s primary goals.
