Stories From the Field

Today, we had a team bring supplies to one of our partner churches in Wharton. When the trucks got there with new supplies, the church was on its last bit of resources to pass out to the residents. The timing was perfect!

We sent two volunteers to the Bloomington area to check out needs of the neighborhoods and talk to residents. They found a church that was being used as a shelter because all the other shelters were shut down. There were 30 children there while the parents were at work and the church had minimal resources. The volunteers gave them everything they had in their pick-up and we're going to service them again tomorrow, as well.

August 29, 2017 | 12:30 PM

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Hurricane Harvey resulted in catastrophic damage to Southeast Texas, forcing thousands of families to flee their homes in search of shelter. The 130mph winds ripped apart buildings and the record-breaking rainfall flooded streets, businesses and residential communities.

Like many survivors, Patrick is trying to wrap his mind around the event.

"It's pretty hard for it to happen, this whole storm. It came in as a tropical depression, and then the next day, it's a hurricane — Category 4. People just don't know what to expect. For my roof to come off, and me not to have a home at the moment... It's just crazy."

But, in the wake of this horrific disaster, kindness stands firm.

Despite dealing with the devastating effects of the storm and the uncertainty of the future, Patrick has chosen to be a force for good in his community. As he volunteers at a Convoy of Hope distribution site, he reflects on his decision to stay in his home town of Victoria, Texas.

"I stayed in a shelter for two days, but they evacuated people to Austin. I wanted to stay and help, so I got off the bus and I stayed here. What else are you going to do? People always give back, and people are going to help me build my house... so why not give back to people before they can give for me?"

Patrick, like many others, has not let his circumstances affect his determination to be kind. Convoy of Hope is privileged to link arms with partners and survivors in the aftermath of disasters.

Let's continue working together to turn moments of kindness into a revolution of kindness.
