We succeeded in that objective as many original club members are now coaching or mentoring this current generation of students. Our charity was founded in 1975 with the express purpose of providing quality amateur athletic activities and educational programs for our community. We stressed the importance of volunteering. We succeeded in that objective as many original club members are now coaching or mentoring this current generation of students. Our club has produced doctors, lawyers, educators, college coaches and career military veterans.
Atlantic Coast Club incorporated in January of 1984 and became an official 501 c 3 charity. Our organization has always been in compliance with the IRS regulatory guidelines. We have made an impressive impact on our community over the last 47 years. Here are some examples.
1975: club was founded and started "age group" track and field program.
1976: First 'age group' track AAU national champion was crowned (Ron Brown, Bethel HS).
1977: Started Olympic Development program.
1984: First Olympians competed in L.A. Olympic Games (Elvis Forde and Edwin Koech).
1985: First club athlete to be ranked #1 in the World (Michael Franks 400 meters).
1988: First Olympic Gold Medalist and Silver Medalist (Peter Rono and Hollis Conway)
1992: Two Olympic Gold Medalists in Barcelona (Rochelle Stevens and Chip Jenkins).
1994: Started SAT college prep classes for high school seniors at I.C. Norcom HS (35 in
original class).
1995: Produced 'age group' national champion team (15-16 year old girls).
1996: Produced 'age group' national champion team (17-18 year old boys).
1998: Produced 'age group' national runner up teams (15-16 year old boys and girls).
1999: Atlantic Coast transitions from a single youth track team to a league program with
eleven teams in our region in Virginia. The program is called the Atlantic Coast
Track League. The first year produced over 900 members in the League. Here are
the original teams: Freedom Striders, Williamsburg, VA; Norfolk Real Deal, Norfolk,
VA; VA Beach Pathfinders, Virginia Beach, VA; Suffolk Stars, Suffolk, VA; Surry
Pioneers, Surry, VA; Sussex Striders, Sussex County, VA; Portsmouth Patriots,
Portsmouth, VA; Track 757, Chesapeake, VA; Lazers Track Club, Petersburg, VA; East
End Lightning, Richmond, VA; Central VA Track and Field Club, Richmond, VA.
2000: Held first annual league championship meet 850 participants. Event ran until 2019
when Covid Pandemic caused cancellation. It has since resumed.
2000: Sydney Olympics produced three team gold medalists (Ken Brokenburr, Brian
Lewis, Latasha Colander).
2009: 1st annual Atlantic Coast High School Indoor Invitational is held in Hampton, VA.
Event ran until 2019 when pandemic interrupted it. It is returning this year.
2012: London Olympics produced bronze medalist (Kellie Wells 100m high hurdles).
2015: 1st annual Atlantic Coast High School Cross Country Invitational is held in
Chesapeake, VA. It has since resumed after pandemic.
2021: 1st annual Atlantic Coast High School indoor Classic is held in new Virginia Beach
Sports Center.
2022: Atlantic Coast Club is partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard in a recruitment drive to
interest high school students in a Coast Guard career. We have invited high school
ROTC cadets to our 2nd annual Atlantic Coast Indoor Track and Field Invitational.
The students will be given lunch and see a brief presentation about Coast Guard
opportunities after high school. The Coast Guard is DELIGHTED!! We plan to
make this annual event and include different branches of the military,
