PROGRAMS
Whether in gated communities or behind bars, in low-income schools or top-ranked institutions, Harmony Project unites people from every dimension of diversity.
COMMUNITY MUSIC
A 500-voice chorus representing Central Ohio’s vibrant diversity, performing for thousands during Spring and Winter concerts and featured at numerous special events and venues throughout the year. There are no fees or auditions to participate—only a commitment to completing volunteer service in the community. In Harmony, it is not about the sound of your voice—it is how you use it to uplift the voices of others to build a stronger, more inclusive community.
When the community joins together, there is harmony.
STUDENT PROGRAMMING
Weekly after-school arts, education, and service learning classes that foster creativity, responsibility, self-confidence, and community engagement for elementary, middle, and high school students throughout Columbus—the vast majority of whom qualify for free lunches and live in underserved communities. Harmony’s longest running student program is held at South High School where nearly one-third of the entire student body participates and 100% of seniors have successfully graduated. Partnering schools include KIPP Columbus, United Schools Network and 17 elementary and middle schools across the eastside of Columbus.
When the community learns together, there is harmony.
PRISON ARTS
Facilitated each week at the Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW), this program engages women in recovery to serve a purpose while serving a sentence. This weekly program affords women the opportunity to use their talents and voices to create positive change in their lives and in the lives of others as they heal from the trauma of physical and emotional abuse and addiction. Creative writing programming and monthly Skype sessions with South African children in hospice care further extend the program’s impact, creating a healing and mutually enriching experience for both the women (most of whom are mothers) and the children (most of whom are orphans).
In 2019, Harmony Project extended this program to serve men at Pickaway Correctional Institution. This weekly program affords participants the opportunity to explore healthy and creative self-expression and make positive connections with the outside world while building a community on the inside.
When the community heals together, there is harmony.
FRIENDS IN HARMONY
Weekly music and recreational classes for differently-abled adults as well as men and women who have experienced homelessness, veterans, and restored citizens. For participants of the Friends in Harmony program, all of whom experience significant physical and/or mental health challenges, the opportunity to sing and serve together is paramount to improving and maintaining well-being, social and interpersonal skills. Participants perform throughout the community as they move from the shadows to the spotlight.
When the community shares together, there is harmony.
SERVICE
Service is at the heart of Harmony Project’s mission. Each season, all participants commit to completing a minimum of 8 hours of volunteer community service, either through projects organized by Harmony Project or through projects and opportunities facilitated by partnering community organizations. Each year, Harmony Project leverages more than 60,000 of hours of volunteer service--more than a $1.5M in-kind contribution to the Central Ohio community. Trees are planted, meals are served, murals are painted, hospitalized children are sung to and snuggled, and so much more. Through performances and volunteer service, voices are made stronger and more relevant as they combine with others across social, cultural, and geographic divides.
