The Community Health Care Association of New York State (CHCANYS) is New York's Primary Care Association, a membership organization representing New York's 80 Community Health Centers (CHCs) statewide. CHCs provide care for 1-in-8 New Yorkers at almost 900 locations across the state. CHCs are a "one-stop shop" for health care, providing high quality primary and preventive care and support services to all New Yorkers, regardless of their insurance coverage or ability to pay. Each CHC has a Board of Directors comprised primarily of people who live in the communities they serve. For more than 50 years, CHCANYS has represented a diverse membership, from the large metropolitan community health systems of New York City to the rural health centers of Upstate and Western New York, and everything in between. CHCANYS provides training and technical assistance to New York's CHCs in areas including clinical quality improvement, emergency management, data and technology, workforce development, and compliance and operations. CHCANYS also supports CHCs through policy and advocacy work, strengthening and focusing health center voices at the local, state and federal levels.
In addition to primary care, most health centers also offer dental, vision, and behavioral health services, including mental health and substance use disorder services. Health center staff assist patients with addressing other barriers as well – connecting patients with services including housing, transportation, health education, and other available support. CHCs provide health care to individuals and families that otherwise would not have access to primary care.
CHCs serve many populations, with programs created specifically to support pregnant women and children, Veterans, people with behavioral health needs and substance use disorder, homeless individuals and families, people with physical and developmental disabilities, and more. In addition to medical care, CHCs operate WIC programs and connect patients with social services in their communities, including housing and food programs.
