SW Montana Veterans Food Pantry & Services is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Deer Lodge, Montana, dedicated to serving veterans and their families throughout Southwest Montana. Since opening our doors in December 2021, we have worked to ensure that veterans and their families have access to nutritious food, essential resources, supportive services, and a welcoming community where they are treated with dignity and respect.
Our motto, “Giving a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out,” reflects the philosophy behind everything we do. We believe veterans should be able to access assistance without embarrassment, unnecessary barriers, or the feeling that they must prove they are struggling enough to deserve help. We do not ask veterans for financial information to receive food assistance. Our purpose is simple: to share the abundance our community provides and help veterans and their families make their household resources go further.
Our primary program is our veteran food pantry, which is designed to feel more like a small grocery store than a traditional food distribution program. Veterans and their families are able to select foods that meet their household's individual needs, preferences, dietary considerations, and family size.
Households may receive staple grocery items through their regular pantry visits, while fresh and perishable foods may be available more frequently as supplies allow. Our inventory can include meat, dairy products, bread and bakery items, fresh produce, frozen foods, canned goods, dry goods, beverages, snacks, personal care products, household necessities, pet food, and other donated items.
This model provides more than food—it provides choice and dignity. It also reduces waste because families are able to choose items they will actually use rather than receiving a predetermined box containing foods that may not work for their household.
The financial impact can be significant. A veteran household can reduce its monthly grocery expenses simply by utilizing the Pantry, allowing limited household income to be redirected toward rent or mortgage payments, utilities, fuel, transportation, medical expenses, prescriptions, childcare, and other essential needs.
Although our physical location is in Deer Lodge, our mission extends far beyond Powell County.
We serve veterans and their families from communities throughout Southwest Montana and continually work to expand awareness and accessibility in rural areas. Veterans have traveled considerable distances to utilize our services, and our outreach efforts have taken food and resources directly into communities where transportation, distance, disability, weather, limited services, or financial circumstances can make accessing assistance difficult.
Rural veterans can face unique challenges. Some live many miles from major grocery stores, VA facilities, veteran service organizations, or other nonprofit resources. Older and disabled veterans may also experience transportation limitations, while younger veteran families may not realize that programs such as ours are intended for them.
One of our continuing priorities is reaching younger veterans and veteran families with children. Food insecurity does not affect only older or retired veterans. Families raising children may be balancing housing costs, childcare, transportation, healthcare, utilities, groceries, and other rapidly increasing expenses. We want these families to know that utilizing a veterans food pantry is not a sign of failure—it is one of the benefits of having a community committed to supporting those who served.
While food security remains at the heart of our organization, SW Montana Veterans Food Pantry & Services has grown in response to the needs we see among the veterans and families we serve.
Our services and activities include:
- Veteran Food Pantry: Grocery-style access to staple foods, fresh and perishable products, meat, dairy, produce, bakery products, frozen foods, household necessities, and other available items.
- Rural Outreach: Food distributions and outreach efforts designed to reach veterans who live outside our immediate community and may have difficulty traveling to Deer Lodge.
- Emergency Food Assistance: Support for veterans and families experiencing an unexpected hardship or immediate food need.
- Transportation Assistance: Transportation assistance for veterans needing to attend medical appointments when resources and scheduling allow.
- Resource Navigation and Referrals: Helping veterans connect with veteran benefits, healthcare, Medicare resources, community programs, and other organizations that may be able to address needs beyond our scope.
- Peer Support and Connection: Providing a welcoming environment where veterans can visit, have a cup of coffee, connect with others, and find people who understand the veteran community.
- Safe Place: Offering veterans a supportive place where they can feel welcome, respected, heard, and connected.
- Holiday Assistance: Providing additional food and holiday support to veteran households during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- Community Partnerships: Working alongside veteran organizations, food donors, businesses, healthcare providers, nonprofits, civic groups, churches, foundations, and other partners to maximize the resources available to veterans.
- Food Rescue and Waste Reduction: Accepting and responsibly distributing donated and rescued food whenever possible so that usable food reaches veteran households rather than being wasted.
- SW Montana Veterans Thrift Store: Our thrift store is open to the public and provides affordable clothing and household goods while helping generate revenue to support the mission and operations of the Veterans Food Pantry.
Our organization recognizes that every veteran's circumstances are different.
Some of the people who walk through our doors are experiencing significant financial hardship. Others are living on fixed incomes and struggling with rising grocery, utility, housing, and medical costs. Some may be disabled, homeless or at risk of homelessness, isolated, or facing an unexpected emergency. Others may simply benefit from reducing their grocery expenses so their income can cover other necessities.
We believe all of these circumstances are valid.
For that reason, we focus on reducing barriers rather than creating them. Veterans are not required to disclose their income or prove financial hardship simply to receive groceries. Our goal is to ensure that food and resources donated for veterans actually reach veterans and their families.
We also recognize that veterans' families serve alongside them in countless ways. Spouses, children, caregivers, widows, and other family members can experience the financial and emotional effects of military service. Supporting a veteran household therefore means recognizing and supporting the family as a whole.
SW Montana Veterans Food Pantry & Services has been built through extraordinary community support.
Food donors, local businesses, foundations, individual donors, volunteers, veteran organizations, healthcare partners, civic organizations, churches, and other nonprofit agencies make it possible for us to stretch every dollar and every donation as far as possible.
Our volunteers are essential to our work. They help pick up donations, unload deliveries, stock and rotate food, prepare items for distribution, assist veterans, operate the thrift store, prepare holiday boxes, support outreach distributions, maintain our facility, organize fundraising events, and complete countless behind-the-scenes tasks necessary to keep our doors open.
We also work closely with community partners rather than attempting to duplicate services already available. When another organization is better equipped to meet a veteran's particular need, we help make that connection whenever possible.
We take seriously the responsibility that comes with every financial contribution, food donation, volunteer hour, and community partnership.
Donations help support food purchases, food transportation and pickup, rural outreach, refrigeration and freezer needs, utilities, facility expenses, insurance, transportation assistance, program supplies, and the everyday operating expenses required to keep our services available.
Our ability to rescue and distribute food also allows donated dollars to have an impact beyond what traditional retail purchasing alone could accomplish. Partnerships with food suppliers, retailers, food banks, businesses, organizations, and community members allow us to provide a broad variety of food and necessities while reducing food waste.
The need for our services has grown substantially since we opened in 2021.
In 2025 alone, we distributed more than 64,600 pounds of food, recorded more than 2,200 total pantry visits, and served veterans and families representing 19 Montana counties and seven states.
That growth has continued into 2026. As more veterans learn about our organization, we are seeing increased demand for food, outreach, transportation, and other support. Growth is encouraging because it means we are reaching people who may not have known these resources existed, but it also increases the need for food, volunteers, reliable transportation, refrigeration, utilities, facility support, and sustainable funding.
Our location in Deer Lodge allows us to serve many veterans in Powell County while also functioning as a resource for veterans traveling from surrounding rural communities. We remain committed to increasing outreach throughout Southwest Montana so geography does not determine whether a veteran has access to help.
Our vision is to continue strengthening a sustainable network of food assistance, outreach, transportation, resource navigation, peer connection, and community support for Southwest Montana's veterans and their families.
