ERIE COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

The Erie County Veterans Memorial Park (ECVMP) envisions this beautiful, peaceful park to become a focal point for Erie County gatherings of veteran tourist groups as well as civic and academic events in Erie County.
The property is currently home to five veteran and war related memorials: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and Purple Heart. It serves veterans, their families, and the Erie community as a reminder of the sacrifices that have been made for our freedoms. Individual United States military service members from Erie County who lost their lives during each of these wars are listed on the memorials. Each memorial was created individually through different veterans’ groups that initially leased the land from the School District of the City of Erie.
In 2019, a new nonprofit was formed to take ownership of the land as the Erie County Veterans Memorial Park, Inc. to assure the perpetual care of the property, to enhance the environment into one, unified memorial park, and to secure the land for the installation of additional Veteran memorials. Over the years this park has been the site of several Memorial Day and other veteran events. The ECVMP board and the School District of the City of Erie are discussing plans to incorporate the park and its historical memorials into the district’s civics curriculum.

CURRENT PROJECTS: First, to provide safe navigation throughout the park we are fundraising to enhance the ADA sidewalk network between the memorials. Second, we will launch a public participation project to build a retaining wall of Veterans names on pavers that will support the hillside and create a St. Michael the Archangel Grotto. Third, the Park will assist the fundraising effort for an installation of a new memorial honoring Veterans who have served in the Global War on Terror.
